There's no better time to be in rural New England than mid-October, and I found myself by Lake Massapoag, which is "great pond" in the Algonquin language. By the lake is a cobblestone traditional labyrinth. On this day, leaves and branches obscured most of the pattern, but after some cleanup work, it was able to be mainly walked.
The labyrinth was inspired in the wake of 9/11 and was installed nearly three years later. As a helpful placard in the kiosk notes, a labyrinth is most definitely not a maze.
