New England small towns have a certain quaintness to them, and Walpole, Massachusetts, certainly has that quality. It also has a very large state prison and is in fairly close suburban proximity to Boston. The prison is actually currently closing after more than a half-century of housing some of the state's most violent offenders. But there's much more to the historic nature of the town. I did some research and found that when British troops tried to attack Newport Harbor in Rhode Island in 1777, it was a brave group of Walpole minutemen who rushed south and stayed several weeks. As a Rhode Islander, I'm grateful for their heroism. At the United Church, a large 11-circuit grass labyrinth sits behind the church in an spacious open field. It was easy to find and walk, and had the added advantage of historic church in the background.
